Recently I've been doing a lot of hiking and these walks have introduced me to vegetation that I've never experienced before. Looking at nature with "a new set of eyes" has reinforced my interest in pattern making and working with plants. Combining that interest with the a fascination of life on the farm has lead to this series of paintings.
Many of the animals I portray seem blissfully unaware of their circumstances; "living in the now" seems to be their mantra . When thinking about representing these creatures I'm thinking in of portraiture. Their profiles seems especially telling; some animals look you straight on as they size you up while others act shy and give you only a whisper of a glance…no time for you! For the full-length poses, the foreground is meant to create a narrative. The gold leaf in the background pays homage to the elegance of each animal; it’s a small gesture of appreciation for their example of life well lived...with attitude.
This series of paintings is available in giclee print form and is, therefore, more affordable while still maintaining the vibrant colors and linework of the original artwork. The original paintings in this group have been photographed using high definition technology before the 23k gold was applied. They are printed on a bamboo based paper using archival inks and only then is the 23k gold leaf added rendering the giclee print an "mono print".
